A coalition of concerned communities from across the country united in response to the increasing number of industrial-scale biogas plant proposals being processed without appropriate national guidelines in place.
From local to national
Our group was created after we recognised that many communities like ours are increasingly facing the potential development of industrial-scale biogas at the heart of local communities, due to lack of clear national guidelines to ensure that community engagement is maximised in any development projects and that the impact to those communities is managed appropriately.
Having seen the parallels across communities, and recognising we could leverage our shared experience to support others, we decided to create the National Biogas Concern Group for Ireland (NBCGI).
Supporting local communities
We are focused on ensuring that local communities without prior experience of biogas development projects can understand the potential impacts to the community, mitigations available and appeal options to ensure they are heard.
Engaging with government and local authorities
We will be engaging with government departments, local authorities and representatives to highlight the need for reform and clear and enforceable guidelines to inform developers and balance energy goals with community well-being.
